World Athletics Championships 2023: The World Athletics Championships (formerly known as the World Championships in Athletics until 2019) are a biennial athletics tournament held by the World Athletics (previously called IAAF or International Association of Athletics Federations). With the Olympic Games, World Athletics Championships represent the highest level competition of senior international outdoor athletics for track and field athletics across the world, including race walking and marathon running. Separate World Championships are organized by the World Athletics for certain other outdoor events, including half marathon and cross-country running, as well as age group and indoor championships.
The World Championships were originally began in the year 1976, concerning the International Olympic Committee dropping the men’s 50 km walk from the Olympic Games for the 1976 Montreal Olympics. The IAAF decided to host its own world championship event after a month and a half from the Olympics. It was the very first World Championships hosted by the IAAF separately from the Olympic Games. A total no. of 35 world records have been set at the championship: 15 by women, 18 by men and 2 in the mixed relay.
At the World Championship, the first world record was set by Jarmila Kratochvílová of Czechoslovakia in 1983, who ran 47.99 seconds to win the women’s 400 m final. The most recent world record was in the Men’s Pole vault in 2022, when Armand Duplantis of Sweden cleared the new record height of 6.21 metres. World records have become ordinary as the history of the event has increased, with no world records set in the 6th, 8th, 11th or 14th editions.
The very first event of the championship was held in 1983. In the year 1913, the IAAF confirmed that the Olympic Games would serve as the World Championships for athletics. In 1976, the separation of Athletics World Championship from the Olympic Games was approved at the IAAF Council Meeting in Puerto Rico. The World Athletics Championships 2023 is the 19th edition of the World Athletics Championships and are scheduled to take place from 19th August to 27 August 2023 in Budapest, Hungary. Previously, the Budapest city had shared an interest to host the World Championships 2007, but withdrew and it eventually took place in Osaka.
The competition will be organized in the National Athletics Centre in Budapest. It will be built and holds a capacity of 36,000.
